Uncertainty and Precaution in Environmental Management

Objective
Communication across the engineering/science -
policy/management interface is difficult. The
realization of the uncertainty and ignorance associated with predictions on which to base policies have made the communication even more difficult. The symposium will address the philosophy, approaches and scientific tools associated with the analysis and communication of uncertainty and ignorance to decisions makers. In particular, the interpretation of the
Precautionary Principle will be analyzed from a
scientific, ethical and legal perspective, in view of the development in recent years. The issues to be addressed will be integrated assessment, water management and chemical risk assessment. The ambition is to convene the best in the field of analyzing and communicating the role of uncertainty and ignorance in political and managerial decision support.
